Quick Take: The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises (2011)

“Not everything. Not yet.”

So I finally had a chance to see The Dark Knight Rises today, but of course I couldn’t possibly spin it as an Olympic movie. Also, I’ve already reviewed one movie today, so I thought I’d just write up a quick one here.

The final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy really was a good movie; it had a lot of hype, and I’d say it delivered for the most part.

Christian Bale was once again solid as Bruce Wayne/Batman, although he didn’t bring a lot new to the part. I’d rank last this out of his three outings as the character. On the other hand, Michael Caine absolutely killed it in his third outing as Alfred. I wasn’t a big fan of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and thought she was largely miscast, unable to bring out the bad girl side that the character desperately needed. Finally, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was fantastic as John Blake, he really winds up being the heart of the entire picture.

If I had one big take-away it would be that this really should have been two separate movies. Despite clocking in at a bladder-busting three hours TDKR still felt like it rushed through some things, particularly in the third quarter of it’s run-time. I think there would have been ample opportunity to create an excellent Empire Strikes Back style ending to one film, and then come back in December for a big final chapter. Still all-in-all very much worth watching, at home I might have rated this as Must See, but in a theater, without a pause button, I can’t give it that endorsement.
